The Well Died and Water’s Eyes are Dry May 21, 2012

“You have no water” my mother  had told me on Wednesday night.   A shock to one’s system when water is available to us everyday, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.  Funny how we just go about our lives and can get so involved with going here, getting this or that finished, paying bills, etc. , not ever thinking that something so vital could be gone like the snap of a finger.

By now you may ask the question: “how did it happen?”  Let’s just say that water for my house was provided by a well.  Water was available for my house as well as two others.  For many years this mechanical beauty has provided a service and now her time had expired.  She was tired and could not keep up the pace any longer.

When I first heard that there was no water and probably would not be fixed for a couple of weeks, I had a feeling of aggravation.  But after the shock wore off and I sat there for a moment to take it in, I began to think how blessed I was to even have the luxury of water.  Yes,  I am referring to water as a luxury because my mind pictured all the people in the world who have a limited supply of water and those who don’t have water at all.

So, I decided to embrace this as a life experience and not as a tragedy.  When you really take a step back and see how rich you are (not in the material aspect), but for life’s little blessings, the love and happiness from within shines out.   I was on a stay here retreat of surviving with natural resources and thankful for the opportunity.

The  length of my retreat was only four days, but the knowledge I gained will be with me a lifetime.

May your day be blessed and peaceful!

When those things in life seem to have you frustrated or stressed, just remember how blessed you are to  experience them.

Every Drop Counts- Reusing Rainwater Saves Money and is Better for Plants April 21, 2012

Since Earth Day is tomorrow, I wanted to share this information about rainwater.  If anyone reading this lives in Florida, we definitely have enough rainfall to help the plants.

Doug Pushard, an expert in rainwater catchment systems who shares his know-how at HarvestH20.com, believes that homeowners capture rainfall for two reasons-either to make the most of a precious water resource in states with low seasonal precipitation or to control storm water runoff in states with high precipitation.

It’s also an easy way to make a dent in household water and sewer bills.  Capturing and managing rainwater provides an environmentally sound alternative to wasting precious tap water pulled from diminishing underground reservoirs, and can replace some or all of a home’s water needs, depending on the system.  Rainwater is also better for nourishing lawns, plants and gardens.  “People want to use rainwater instead of city water in their yards because they understand that city water carries chlorine, which is not great for plants,” Pushard explains.

The amount of water used by residential irrigation is significant.  According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Water Sense Program, an American family of four uses 400 gallons of water a day, including 30 percent of it outside.  More than half of that outdoor water is used for lawns and gardens, with the rest sprayed on cars, in swimming pools and on sidewalks and driveways.  Collectively, nationwide landscape irrigation totals more than 7 billion gallons per day.

Water Calculations

In its simplest form, rainwater harvesting involves little more than placing rain barrels–with capacities from 55 gallons to several hundred gallons–under a home’s downspout.  Popular models can be purchased from home improvement stores, or county extension classes teach how to make one from inexpensive parts.  Online research shows the various styles available; most have a spigot at the base for attaching a hose or filling a watering can.

The larger capacity, more sophisticated systems use storage cisterns than can hold thousands of gallons of water below ground.  These use pumps that move the water to sprinkler systems or other points of use.

For these more complicated setups, Pushard recommends engaging professional help, adding that below-ground systems will capture excess water year-round, even in climates where temperatures drop.  “In northern New Mexico, where I live, we get almost one-third of our precipitation in the winter,” he says.  “If you have a below-ground system, you can capture that; with an above-ground one, you can’t, because the tank or fittings would freeze and burst.

The formula for determining the greatest amount of water available to capture is related to roof size.  Multiply the square footage of the roof times the local annual rainfall (found at Tinyurl.com/73enzjx), and then multiply the result by .623 gallons.  That .623 factor is “how many gallons are in an area of one square foot by one inch deep of rainwater,” according to one of Pushard’s online tutorials.

Not all roof materials are created equal.  On the high-end, tile, metal, concrete or asphalt roofs have a 95 percent runoff efficiency; gravel roofs, 70 percent; and grass roofs, 17 percent, so factor that in, too.  Pushard recommends always going with a bigger tank, if possible, to avoid having to add more water storage later.

Think Big

Rainwater harvesting works as an effective irrigation device, but it needn’t be limited to outdoor use.  One of the easiest–and most useful–places to direct captured rainwater is toilets.  Citing bathrooms as a home’s biggest water user, the EPA notes that a single toilet can use 27 percent of house-hold water.  “It’s ludicrous that we use drinking water to flush toilets,” says Pushard.  To use stored rainwater instead, run a new plumbing line to the rainwater storage tank and install a pump that activates when the toilet flushes.

Rainwater can supply sink faucets, as well, but counting on rainwater to be the sole source of all household water requires a substantial investment and a filtration, purification and UV light system to make the water drinkable.  When capturing rain for potable uses, roofing material becomes more important: Unpainted metal and tile are preferred, because these will not leach chemicals into the water that are difficult to remove.

In terms of overall cost, the simplest rainwater collection systems will cost a few hundred dollars (less than $100 per barrel), while a whole-house system will cost tens of thousands.  However, Pushard points out, rainwater harvesting can be a lifesaver with water shortages becoming a new norm in many states.

Breathing Into Spring…the Sweet Water of Life March 21, 2012

It’s the second day of Spring and yesterday it was sunny and beautiful.  Today it is cloudy and the wind is sharing its freedom of expression.  I love when there is a change in season, especially spring because it brings a new and fresh awakening to life and to ourselves.   There are many aspects of how one will create and live out their new season.  Some of us will clean out all the old clothes, or get rid of stuff we are no longer using or for that matter really need, hence the term “Spring Cleaning.”

But what about cleansing our mind, body and spirit.  How can we bring more love, peace and compassion to ourselves and share it with others?  There is so much joy and beauty on this earth that we can not only see every day, but have the opportunity to really enjoy and be thankful.  You may want to try something new that you have thought about for some time, but just keep saying to yourself: ” Maybe tomorrow.”  Every day is a new experience, and if you have a passion for something, just do it!   Perhaps there are steps you would like to fulfill to make this possible.

You could pick a peaceful place to just take some time to be alone, close your eyes and breathe in the fresh air, while letting the sounds of nature sink into your being.  Imagine what that would feel like to just be there, with your eyes closed, but open to your environment.  Are you there yet?

Release everything that has already happened that may have brought stress, unhappiness or sadness to your life.  Move forward and let all  the love and positivity be drawn to you.  You are worthy of happiness, peace and love.

Inspiring others will bring forth your inspiration and will also liven your spirit!  I think bringing encouragement to others, not only benefits them, but you as well.  Raise the compassion frequency!

Nourish yourself by opening your heart to all!  It does the heart good when you share your love and compassion with all who you meet in life.  We may have only one heart, but all of them are connected.

Grow from within, watering the seed of your being so it may blossom for the world to see.  Keep grounded and surround yourself with positivity and love.  Is there something new you would like to learn?  Why not seek and satisfy your curiosity?  You have the power within you for all that is good.  Each of us has a unique talent and gift that we can share.  Put some spring into your step and move into a new adventure!

Peace and love to all!

Day 23: Lunching with Friends: Enjoying Good Food, Special Moments and Life’s Little Tidbits January 26, 2012

Friends

It seems like spending time together is almost impossible in this fast paced world, whether it be family, friends, relationships, etc.  We all have our daily dose of the stresses, strains and frustrations that life brings to the table.  When we get tangled up in what we think is important: money, job status, car, and the like, often the little treasures of being with friends or loved ones may get lost in the web.

On this day, my sisterhood of friends were getting together for lunch, which it has been a long while since we have had time to catch up and talk about how everything is going with each other.

Where we were having lunch is a local restaurant surrounded by water with an atmosphere that is peaceful and relaxing.

Upon arrival to the restaurant, we all hugged and said “how are you?”  We sat down at our table, (which by the way was right on the water and it was such a perfect day!) and I gave all the girls friend cards to say that I am so blessed to have them in my life.

The server came over to take our order (in respect of my friends, I am not using their real names).  Naomi ordered the fish basket, Tonya was in the mood for the Southwestern Chicken Salad, Kristi also had chicken, Bella ordered lite which was a salad and sweet potato fries and for me Sirimi Seafood Salad.  In case you may be wondering what Sirimi consists of it is imitation crab meat.  ( You learn something new every day because that is the first time I have seen this word.)  There is nothing on the menu that will disappoint.

While waiting for our yummy food choices, we started conversation.  There were so many things to hear in such a short time.  Tonya had news that she was going to be a grandma and the glow on her face showed that she was the happiest person alive and nothing was going to take that away.  Kristi has been doing a lot of traveling via her motorcycle.  Naomi has been working on and off and helping her friend with animals.  Bella was saying that she is so busy and time is limited, and how her little ones were growing up so fast.  As for me, I was so excited to see everyone, my mouth was going like the energizer bunny, I’m surprised no one told me to shut up!  That is why I love my friends, we are all different but we love one another for who we are.

Everyone was finishing their lunch and it was time to go our separate ways, some going back to work, appointments and then one just free to enjoy the day.

I only hope that it won’t be too long before we get together again.  I really miss all of my friends and seeing their smiling faces.

The Fourth Day: Coin Return December 29, 2011

It is a brisk morning in Florida and the dogs and I are getting ready to take a ride!  Now if any of you reading this has dogs you will know that you can’t say the word “ride” around them without full blast excitement.  Speaking of dogs, mine is right beside me with a toy in his mouth wondering when I am going to stop everything and play with him.    Dogs are just like toddlers, always wanting your attention, but also  adorable and loving.

This particular ride today consisted of going to pick up a supply of water at the Glacier Water Machine nearby.  Gallon jugs are thirty cents or 5 gallons for $1.50.  I only needed to fill up two of them, so pretty quick and easy.   As I filled the last jug, my change came clinking to the bottom.  I stood there for a minute and just stared at the shiny little opening  where the coins had landed.

I smiled and just left them there thinking to myself that I wanted to share it with the next person just in case they needed it to fill up their water jugs.

Passing the love and enjoying every minute!

Peace, love and light to everyone
